The ITF in Sri Lanka has helped the repatriation of five Sri Lankan seafarers from Panama, where they had been stranded for nine months.

The seafarers had boarded  a Nicaraguan-flagged vessel in Panama, where it remained anchored for more than nine months after it was abandoned by its Sri Lankan owner. The crew, who never received any pay, approached the ITF for help to return home.

ITF inspector Ranjan Perera worked with the ship's and crew's agents, supported by the seafarers' families, to raise the funds for the costly flights home.

The five crewmembers from the Sonikalas went to the ITF offices in Colombo on 15 July to thank him for his work in getting them home.
